Ingrid Surgenor

We were delighted when Ingrid agreed to become our President in 1998.  She is one of Britain’s busiest and most successful pianists and is internationally renowned for her work as official accompanist for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition.

Following study at the Royal Academy of Music, London and with the legendary accompanist Gerald Moore, Ingrid began her career at the Glyndebourne Festival. In addition to a continuing association with Welsh National Opera, she has worked at the Vienna, Buxton, Taormina and Hong Kong Festivals and during the 1990’s was head of music preparation at the world renowned Bayreuth Festival in Germany.

Ingrid has travelled widely to accompany many singers including Nuccia Focile, Bryn Terfel, Sir Thomas Allen, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Bernd Welkl and Dennis O’Neill and has given recitals at the Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff festivals and at opera houses in Brussels, Munich, Oslo, Manaus, and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.

Her many television appearances have included documentaries about her career, and range from music quiz, cookery and discussion programmes to song recitals and the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition.

In addition Ingrid is an adjudicator, gives master classes and is a principal opera coach and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. She has been awarded Honorary Fellowships by the University of Wales, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is a National Advisor to the Arts Council of Wales. In June 2000 she was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

She has made many recordings and has released a compilation disc ‘Partners in Song’
